A 17th-century Jacobean country house with lovely grounds by the River Swale. Once the stately home of aristocrats (and even connected to the founder of Maryland, USA), it now welcomes visitors to explore period-furnished rooms and exhibitions. The 90-acre grounds include woodland and a lake. Don't miss the Tea Room in the old stables—Kiplin is known as "the perfect place for a day out," combining 400 years of history, incredible architecture, beautiful gardens and a cosy tea room for a relaxing cream tea.

Richmond Castle & Riverside Walk

Perched high above the River Swale, Richmond Castle is "one of the finest Norman castles in Britain." Built in the 11th century, it's among England's oldest stone castles, with surviving walls and a prominent keep. You can climb the keep for glorious views over Richmond town and the Yorkshire Dales. Below the castle, a short scenic walk leads to the riverside Falls (small waterfall on the Swale)—a lovely spot for a gentle amble after exploring the castle ruins.

Thorp Perrow Arboretum

A beautiful 100-acre woodland garden boasting one of the finest collections of trees in the North of England. Stroll through peaceful paths and glades; in spring and autumn the colours are spectacular. Thorp Perrow also features a fantastic Bird of Prey & Mammal Centre, home to eagles, owls, meerkats and wallabies, with regular falconry displays. There's a children's playground and picnic areas, making it an easy family day out where kids can run around and adults can enjoy the tranquility.

The charming market town of Masham is famous as the home of Yorkshire beer, housing two legendary breweries a stone's throw apart. Black Sheep Brewery and Theakston's Brewery both offer guided tours where you can learn about traditional brewing and enjoy tastings of their ales (often ending in a pint at the brewery tap!). Even without a tour, you can visit their visitor centres or gift shops to pick up local ales. It's a delightful stop for an afternoon pint and a wander around Masham's cobbled square—truly "Masham, the home of beer in North Yorkshire."

World of James Herriot

This delightful museum in Thirsk is the actual 1940s veterinary surgery and home of James Herriot—real name Alf Wight—author of the beloved books. It's the original Skeldale House, now filled with exhibits about Herriot's life and the TV series. You can explore the fully restored surgery and living quarters where he lived and worked, step onto the set of the TV show, and even try your hand at being a vet in the interactive gallery. Overflowing with nostalgia and Yorkshire charm, it's a must-visit for Herriot fans, but even those unfamiliar will enjoy the insight into rural veterinary life of the past.

A popular theme park near Ripon, ideal if you have kids to entertain. Lightwater Valley offers over 35 rides and attractions tailored to under-12s—think mini roller coasters, carousel, pirate boats, adventure playgrounds and a splash zone. It's been voted "Yorkshire's best value family day out," and you can see why: there's enough to fill a day with funfair thrills, playground laughs, and even a treetop nets adventure. For older teens the park is more low-key since the big coasters are gone, but for younger children it's absolutely perfect. There are food stalls and picnic spots on-site.

This atmospheric attraction in Knaresborough is England's oldest tourist attraction, open since 1630! Mother Shipton was a famous 16th-century prophetess said to be born in the cave. You can visit the small cave where the legend began and see the adjacent Petrifying Well, a natural wonder whose mineral-rich waters turn objects to stone—you'll see everyday items (even teddy bears) hung under the flow slowly turning to rock over time. The park offers woodland walks along the river, a wishing well, and a play area for kids. It's a charming mix of history and legend with a dash of the magical.

Don't miss the extensive streamside garden (the longest in the UK) winding through the valley, and keep an eye out for whimsical garden sculptures. It's delightful in every season: spring blooms, summer roses, autumn foliage and winter lights. There's a Bettys Tea House on site for refreshments after your walk.

The Valley Gardens are Harrogate's gorgeous public gardens, covering 17 acres in the town's historic Low Harrogate spa area. Strolling here is a delight: immaculate flowerbeds, tree-lined paths, and even some restored mineral water wells and pump room buildings dotted about (a nod to Harrogate's spa heritage). There's a play area for children, a crazy golf course, a skate park, and a cosy café in the old Magnesia Well Pump Room. Adjacent to the gardens is the Royal Pump Room Museum, housed in an ornate 1842 pump room where Victorian visitors once drank the sulfurous spa waters. An English Heritage Grade II listed garden.

A magnificent 12th-century abbey ruin set in an awe-inspiring water garden (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Wander among ancient abbey ruins and reflective pools in the landscaped Studley Royal Park. Even in ruins, it's described as "the best preserved of English abbeys"—a serene, romantic spot for a picnic or stroll amidst history and nature. One of the most spectacular heritage sites in England, combining monastic ruins with stunning Georgian water gardens and deer park.

This combined outing takes you into the Yorkshire Dales for history and scenery. Bolton Castle, dating from 14th century, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in England, still dominating Wensleydale with its commanding presence. Mary, Queen of Scots was famously held prisoner here in 1568—today you can tour the castle rooms, watch a falconry display or even try your hand at longbow archery. A short drive away are Aysgarth Falls, a picturesque triple-flight waterfall on the River Ure surrounded by woodland. The falls have been a popular attraction for over 200 years, admired by Wordsworth and Turner.

Brimham Rocks

An amazing collection of weird and wonderful natural rock formations scattered across a high moor. These enormous balancing gritstone rocks have bizarre shapes—imagination will run wild (spot the "Dancing Bear" or the "Idol Rock"!). Children (and adventurous adults) will enjoy clambering on the rocks, and the panoramic views of Nidderdale are stunning on a clear day. It's a perfect spot for a picnic and a small adventure—a great day out for families, climbers and those who love the outdoors. National Trust, car park fee applies.
